With a name like Pachangacha, calling an album anything other than WEIRDHEAD would be strange. However, don’t psych yourself up for a record that’s overly eccentric. Instead, you’ll find a group of polished musicians that just like to have fun. While the tone of WEIRDHEAD could almost be described as childish, the groove, understated softness of some of the tracks, and influences that shine through will surprise you.
WEIRDHEAD appropriately jumps right into “The Fucking Beginning” with a track that is simultaneously gritty, grungy, and poppy. This is the prevailing tone of the music: in your face, almost that of a garage band that’s fun to listen to. However, “The Fucking Beginning” and its follow-up track “Amphetamine” trick you into thinking you’re in for an album full of noisy, disjointed, and unpolished songs that were perhaps more fitting for a first demo than a 14 track album. Stick around and you’re in for a treat. Fans of Brand New’s album Your Favorite Weapon may especially dig this track.
“Amphetamine” brings us a high-pitched voice out of left field, with lyrics containing a strung-out character begging for drugs in multiple but similar ways. ‘I heard your mom broke her knee so would you help me out and spare some ‘phetamine? … I’m not the same as I was,’ begs the high-pitched voice, while other more normal sounding voices plead ‘heard your mom broke her knee now, would you give me some amphetamine now?’ and ‘would you give me? Would you give me?’ It’s quite fitting that the track ends with the spoken ‘I don’t feel so good.’
Pachangacha knows what rock is all about: boobs, balls, and poop. Masturbating in gas station restrooms, disappointing your parents, and being that bearded hobo who freaks out all the girls at a college house party. Destroying any chance of real employment by covering your body with…
